Middlesex CCC v Warwickshire CCC: Match Report Day 4
30 July 2012
The LV= County Championship match against Warwickshire at Uxbridge ended in a tame draw after rain wiped out the first 33 overs of the final days’ play, both sides took eight points from the match.
Middlesex began the day leading by 182 runs with seven second innings wickets intact but the visitors had an immediate boost when Eoin Morgan was out to the twelfth ball of the day when he edged a Chris Wright delivery and keeper Tim Ambrose held the catch at the second attempt, Morgan having failed to add to his overnight score of seven.
John Simpson joined Neil Dexter at the wicket and Dexter reached his first Championship fifty of the season in the 40th over (off 108 balls, 7 fours). Simpson had batted positively in making eighteen off 21 balls before he holed out to Boyd Rankin on the deep square-leg boundary off Wright’s bowling to reduce Middlesex to 133-5.
Jeetan Patel replaced Wright at the Pavilion End and Dexter went down the track to hit him for a straight six. However, in Patel’s following over Gareth Berg hit the ball straight to deep mid-wicket where Rankin took the catch to dismiss Berg for a single. Ollie Rayner joined Neil Dexter with the total on 147-6 with 56 overs remaining but it was obvious that Middlesex felt unable to set Warwickshire a target as they were unlikely to be able to take ten wickets in the time available.
Dexter and Rayner added 34 runs for the seventh wicket in twelve overs before Chris Rogers declared on 181-6 to leave Warwickshire needing 260 to win in forty overs. Neil Dexter made a welcome return to form and ended with 84 not out with Ollie Rayner 14 not out. Chris Wright had figures of 3-68 from 16 overs with Jeetan Patel taking 2-26 from 13 overs.
Not surprisingly, Warwickshire made no attempt to chase the target and were content to opt for batting practice. Will Porterfield opened the batting with Varun Chopra and after seeing off the threat of Tim Murtagh and Toby Roland-Jones, the pair took the visitors to 50-0 before Porterfield got a top-edge to an Ollie Rayner delivery and Gareth Berg took the catch at cover to dismiss him for 23.
Jim Troughton joined Chopra and the pair took Warwickshire to 77-1 when the last hour of the match began. Surprisingly, they batted on for a further three overs, scoring just one run before the draw was agreed. Chopra was 38 not out with Troughton 10 not out. Ollie Rayner had figures of 1-13 from 9 overs, Tim Murtagh 0-12 from 5 overs, Toby Roland-Jones 0-18 from 4 overs, Steven Crook 0-20 from 5 overs and Dawid Malan 0-11 from 4 overs.
