Middlesex County Cricket Club’s Australian overseas batsman, Chris Rogers, has been unveiled as the worthy winner of the Brooks Macdonald Player of the Month Award for July 2012.
Rogers hit several crucial innings throughout July in both First-Class and List-A forms of the game, playing a vital role at the top of the order as Middlesex earned a hard fought draw against league leaders Nottinghamshire in the County Championship and secured convincing victories over both Essex and Gloucestershire in the Clydesdale Bank 40.
Two half centuries from Rogers in consecutive County Championship matches saw him cement his position as Middlesex’s leading run-scorer in First-Class cricket this season, and a further half century and unbeaten hundred in consecutive Clydesdale Bank 40 Group A matches also saw Rogers hit top spot in the run-scoring list in List-A cricket.
The first of Rogers’ County Championship half centuries came against Nottinghamshire, when an innings of 59 in Middlesex’s second innings helped earn the club a deserved draw at Uxbridge against the Division One league leaders. In his very next innings Rogers again hit 59 in Middlesex’s first innings against Durham, although this time was unable to stop Middlesex slipping to defeat at Chester-Le-Street.
In the Clydesdale Bank 40, Rogers’ form has been no less impressive, as against Essex at Chelmsford he hit a quick-fire 64 at more than a run a ball to set Middlesex up for a convincing nine wicket victory over the Eagles. In his next match, against Gloucestershire at Cheltenham, an unbeaten century from Rogers saw Middlesex go one better, when a terrific innings of 122 not out off 102 balls led the Panthers to a ten wicket victory and another two points.
Angus Fraser accepted a magnum of branded Brooks Macdonald champagne and a cheque for £1,000 on Chris Rogers’ behalf, presented by Robin Eggar, Director of Brooks Macdonald, Middlesex CCC’s principal sponsors, on the pitch in front of the Lord’s Pavilion during the interval of Middlesex’s final Group match of the Clydesdale Bank 40 competition against Essex at Lord’s.
