2nd XI Trophy Semi-Final: Middlesex v Lancashire - Match Report
28 August 2012
Having progressed to the semi-finals without losing a single match, perhaps it was a bit of over-confidence that really took its toll on what was a fairly young and relatively untried side in the clash against Lancashire at Radlett.
Having won the toss, Tom Scollay elected to field and opened with the ever improving Gurjit Sandhu who dismissed the opener Agathangelou in his third over. With the skies brightening and the early moisture lifting off the track, the pitch soon started to flatten out. It was, therefore great credit to the fielders and great tenacity from the bowlers, that kept Lancashire to 206 for 7 off their 40 overs.
The confidence in the dressing room at the break proved to be a little premature as Middlesex lost 5 of their top order for just 66. It was then that the experience of John Simpson (76) and the application of Ryan Higgins (55*) came to the fore, managing, with the help of just a dozen or so runs from the rest of the tail, to take us within 14 runs of winning at the close.
All in all, the 2s have enjoyed a fantastic run in the Trophy this year and on balance probably deserved a finals place. Such is cricket, and here’s to even greater success next year!
