2nd XI Friendly: Middlesex v Lancashire at Radlett CC - Match Report
29 August 2012
One of the great things about following the 2s is the fact that you get to see future Middlesex and possibly England stars of the future learning their craft amongst more established names, trying to regain a bit of form, or coming back from injury.
This end of season friendly at Radlett was no different. John Simpson, recovering from a virus was first to make his mark, taking an amazing 7 catches behind the stumps (just one shy of the 2nd XI Championship record), and helping in no small measure to restrict the visitors to 132 all out after just 46.3 overs. Robbie Williams took a 4fer and the promising youngster Harry Podmore chipped in with a 3fer.
And so to the batters, who were looking to bat long and only once in the game. Nick Gubbins, surely one to watch for the future, stroked a superb and chanceless 75 before being unluckily run out backing up. But it was the eventual man of the match John Simpson who stamped his mark with the bat scoring 105. Highest score of the game, though, was earned by Josh Davey who scored a really well made 149 before getting wrapped on the pads and being adjudged LBW.
455-6 looked a useful total when we declared, leaving Lancs 60 overs to bat out for the draw, or go for the win. Despite the heroics of opener Reece (132*), our bowlers made steady inroads, thanks in no little measure to 8 catches in the field. Tom Smith finished with 19-2-6-91 and John Simpson added another couple of catches bringing his match total to 10.
Middlesex ran out winners by an innings and 62 runs, a fitting end to a strong season from the 2s.
