Rain ruined the final day of the LV= County Championship match against Warwickshire at Edgbaston and the match ended in a tame draw with neither side having a second innings. Middlesex took ten points from the match with Warwickshire taking eight points.
After rain prevented any play on the final day until 12.30 pm, only three more overs were bowled before further rain arrived and an early lunch was taken. With 17 overs left of the 110 overs available for bonus points, it was a battle to see which side could collect further points. Warwickshire resumed their innings on 267-5 and Rikki Clarke showed his intentions by hooking a Finn delivery for six over backward square-leg. Corey Collymore continued his spell at the Birmingham End and conceded just four runs in his first over, which included a no-ball. Tom Milnes took six runs off the first five balls of Steve Finn’s following over before the rain arrived and lunch was taken.
The resumption was delayed after lunch which meant that a total of 29 overs had been lost of the day’s allocation. Collymore and Finn continued to bowl after the break and Warwickshire reached three hundred in the hundredth over. Milnes gave Clarke good support and Tim Murtagh was brought on at the Pavilion End to replace Finn who was wicket-less, having conceded 90 runs in 22 overs. Ten runs came off the 103rd over, bowled by Collymore and Clarke and Milnes took the hosts to 332-5 before Milnes was out when he hooked a Murtagh delivery straight to Collymore at long-leg to be dismissed for a valuable 24.
Jeetan Patel made just five before he was bowled in Murtagh’s following over and Tom Allin was caught by Dawid Malan at first slip off Murtagh’s next ball. Last man, Boyd Rankin joined Clarke with a further twelve runs needed from 15 balls to collect a fourth batting point and Middlesex needing one wicket to collect a third bowling point. Rankin survived the ‘hat-trick’ ball and two further balls in the Murtagh over before Clarke scored seven runs in Collymore’s next over. Rankin got an edge down to third man for a four off Murtagh and Warwickshire secured their fourth batting point. Middlesex were unable to take a further wicket and had to settle for two bowling points.
Rikki Clarke reached a 66 ball fifty (1 six & 6 fours) and with Rankin, took Warwickshire to 374-8 at which point a further shower of rain arrived and an early tea was taken. No further play was possible, leaving Clarke 65 not out and Rankin 9 not out. Tim Murtagh had figures of 5-85 from 26 overs with Corey Collymore taking 3-78 from 25 overs.
