Middlesex CCC have agreed to allow Tom Smith to go out on loan to Gloucestershire. Smith, who travelled with Middlesex's YB40 squad to Headingley for the game against Yorkshire, will be available to play for Gloucestershire CCC from Friday 21 June through to the end of the Group stages of the 2013 Friends Life t20. During the period Smith will also be available to play first-class cricket, starting with Friday's match against Australia A.
Middlesex CCC's Managing Director of Cricket, Angus Fraser, said: "We are delighted that this loan move gives Tom the opportunity to play first team cricket. Ollie Rayner is currently ahead of Tom as our first choice limited over spinner and Adam Voges is capable of bowling occasional left arm spin. This reduces the chances of Tom playing regularly in our t20 side and it is why we are happy for him to play for Gloucestershire. At this stage of his career he needs to be playing first team cricket and this will help his development.
"With Ravi Patel returning to full fitness after recovering from a broken bone in his right hand, Tom was unlikely to feature in Middlesex's LV=CC fixtures against Warwickshire and Sussex too. Tom is a smashing lad and we wish him the best of luck during his time with Gloucestershire CCC."
