Our Indoor School in Finchley was home to Middlesex Cricket’s inaugural Disability Talent ID event on Wednesday 29 January 2014. Four Middlesex secondary schools (Grey Coat Hospital from Westminster, Hendon from Barnet, Oak Lodge from Barnet & Phoenix from Tower Hamlets) brought their most talented sportsmen & women to be put through their paces by Middlesex disability squad coaches, for the chance to then be invited to join one of our County Performance Squads!
The day began with some warm ups and ball work, quickly moving on to the main part of the day which was centred around ‘Superstar’ style assessments. Our first station was fielding; four sets of stumps laid out in a square, a start line and four balls in the middle. Players were timed running from the start line to the middle, with a ball thrown underarm at a different set of stumps between each run, with 5 seconds taken off their time for a hit. Some extraordinary times were seen, with the highlight of the day a time of 0 seconds achieved by a young man from Hendon School!
After lunch, it was time to move on to the batting station. Players had to hit three balls of a tee, if they got the ball through the closest (and widest) set of cones they got 1 point, through the middle set of cones they got 5 points and through the furthest (and narrowest) set of cones, they got 10 points. Our player of the day, who got a time of 0 seconds in the morning’s fielding station, managed to also get a perfect score of 30 at this station. Overall, there was also a very high standard of batting across the board. Our final station to end the day was bowling. As expected, this was the toughest of the three for our players but we were very impressed by the concentration and effort on display after a long and tiring day.
We finished off with a small presentation, the top 3 placed players for each station receiving an award along with all participants also taking home a certificate of attendance. The coaches will be getting together shortly to compare notes and invite players to join our squads. In the meantime we would like to say a big thank you and well done to everyone involved for making it such a fun day!
