Middlesex Panthers suffered a second defeat in two days when they agonisingly went down by four runs against Warwickshire in the Royal London One-Day Cup at Lord’s. Chasing a total of 241 runs to win, they reached 180-3 with 11.2 overs remaining but after losing Ryan Higgins (26) and Chris Rogers (96) in the space of seven balls they lost their way against the Warwickshire spinners.
Middlesex fielded the same side that were defeated in Cardiff the previous day and they again lost the toss and Warwickshire elected to bat first. The visitors lost an early wicket when Will Porterfield (5) was caught at mid-wicket by Chris Rogers off the bowling of Tim Murtagh in the sixth over which brought Jonathan Trott to the wicket to joinVarun Chopra. The pair saw off the threat from Steve Finn who conceded just ten runs in a fiery five over spell and Tim Murtagh who had figures of 1-13 after six overs and they took the total to 67-1 after 21 overs.
Chopra then cut a Neil Dexter delivery for a six over cover-point with a total of twelve runs coming from Dexter’s fifth over. Dawid Malan joined Ravi Patel to form an all-spin attack but they were unable to get a further break-though. Toby Roland-Jones returned to the attack with the total on 105-1 after 28 overs and he got the wicket of Chopra whoskied a catch to mid-wicket where Chris Rogers ran in to take the catch to dismiss Chopra for 46.
Tim Ambrose joined Trott who reached a 73 ball fifty (3 fours) in the 31st over and the pair took Warwickshire to 133-2 after 35 overs. The batting powerplay was taken at this point and Steve Finn returned to the attack and he had Ambrose caught by Neil Dexter at mid-wicket for 14 withhis first delivery. Laurie Evans joined Trott who was playing something like his old self and they took Warwickshire to 159-3 before Trott drove a Tim Murtagh delivery straight to Ravi Patel at mid-off who took the catch to dismiss Trott for 78 (off 109 balls).
Dawid Malan came on at the Nursery End and Rikki Clarke gave Malan a return catch to be dismissed for just three to leave Warwickshire on 165-5 in the 42nd over. Ateeq Javidjoined Evans and the pair gave the innings impetus with Evans hitting Tim Murtagh for a six over mid-wicket. The pair added 45 runs for the sixth wicket before Javid was bowled by Toby Roland-Jones for 15. Jeetan Patel then came in and hit the last two balls of Roland-Jones’ over for a four and a six.
Six runs came off the penultimate over, bowled by Steve Finn but Laurie Evans hit Roland-Jones for a six before he was run-out attempting a third leg-bye for 46. A further bye was scored off the last ball of the innings as the Warwickshire total reached 240-7 after their fifty overs. TimMurtagh had figures of 2-36 from 9 overs with Toby Roland-Jones taking 2-60 in 10 overs, Steve Finn 1-35 in 10 overs and Dawid Malan 1-27 in 6 overs.
In reply, the Panthers got off to a poor start, losing DawidMalan who was caught at the wicket by Tim Ambrose off the bowling of Hannon-Dalby for five and Nick Gubbinswho was caught at first slip by Vuran Chopra off Rikki Clarke’s bowling, also for five. Eoin Morgan joined Chris Rogers with the total on 27-2 in the ninth over and they showed their wealth of experience in taking the Panthers to 93-2 at the half-way point of the innings.
Six singles were scored in Josh Poysden’s first over before Rogers scored his fourth four to reach an 85 ball fifty in the 27th over. Rogers and Morgan took the total to 121-2 before Morgan was LBW to Poysden for 32 having missed an attempted reverse sweep. Ryan Higgins joined Rogers and Higgins was missed by Hannon-Dalby running back from mid-on when he had made six. The pair began to accelerate the scoring and they took the Panthers to 180-3 before Higgins was caught by Josh Poysden at short extra-cover off Jeetan Patel for 26.
John Simpson joined Rogers but only a further two runs were scored before Middlesex lost the key wicket of Chris Rogers for 96 who chipped Ateeq Javid to mid-wicket where Chopra took a fine catch. Neil Dexter joined John Simpson who hit Poysden for a six in the 44th over and with eight runs coming in the following over from Javid, thirty-five runs were needed off the last five overs.
After five singles came off the first five balls of the next over, Neil Dexter was stumped off the last ball ofPoysden’s over for nine which brought Toby Roland-Jones to the wicket. Five runs came off the next over and with a further six runs coming off the 48th over, Middlesex needed nineteen runs off the last two overs. Jeetan Patel returned to bowl the 49th over and Simpson cut his first ball of the over straight to backward-point where Poysdentook the catch to dismiss him for 23.
Steve Finn came in and he hit Patel for a four off the second ball he faced and with a further two singles scored in the over, thirteen runs were needed off the final over from Hannon-Dalby. Toby Roland-Jones struck the first ball of the over to long-on but was run-out attempting a second run by Luke Evans throw to ‘keeper Tim Ambrose. TimMurtagh joined Finn at the wicket and after two singles came off the next two balls, Murtagh got an edge and the ball went for a four to leave six runs required off the last two balls of the match. However, Murtagh only managed a single off the penultimate ball and Finn was unable to score a run off the final ball as the innings closed on 236-8, Warwickshire winning the match by four runs.
A total of twenty-seven overs were bowled by the Warwickshire spinners with Jeeten Patel taking 2-36 in 10 overs, Josh Poysden 2-49 in 9 overs and Ateeq Javid 1-50 in 8 overs; Rikki Clarke who opened the bowling had figures of 1-13 from 7 overs but was unable to bowl again due to a hand injury whilst Hannon-Dalby had figures of 1-41 from 9 overs.
