Middlesex County Cricket Club is delighted to announce that Tim Murtagh will be rewarded with a Benefit Year in 2015.
Tim joined Middlesex in 2007, after six years with Surrey, and has consistently played a key role in Middlesex’s seam attack since the day he joined the club.
In his debut year with Middlesex Murtagh picked up 42 first-class wickets at an average of just 24.85, which he followed up with hauls of 64 first-class wickets in 2008, 60 in 2009 and 38 in 2010.
In Middlesex’s County Championship Division Two winning campaign of 2011, 85 first-class wickets (80 in the Championship) at just 20.87 were instrumental in helping the club lift the Division Two title and take us back to the County Championship top flight after a five year absence.
Since then, Murtagh’s performances in Division One of the Championship have been equally as impressive, collecting 61 first-class wickets at 23 in 2012 (60 in the Championship) and 60 wickets at 20 in 2013; all in Championship cricket.
Tim’s consistent performances with the ball earned him the Middlesex Player of Year Award for three consecutive years in 2007, 2008 and 2009 and again in 2011.
Speaking of Tim Murtagh’s outstanding contribution to Middlesex, Angus Fraser, Middlesex’s Managing Director of Cricket, commented…
“The movement of players within the county game means that Benefit Years seem to come around far less frequently now than they did 15-20 years ago.
When Benefit Years are awarded at Middlesex CCC they are fully deserved and no player in recent times has done more for the club than Tim.
In the six years that I have been back at Middlesex he has led the attack and performed at a remarkably high level. During this period his bowling figures have been the best of any player in the country…well, that’s what he tells me anyway!
Tim’s contribution off the field is as important as that on it. He is a strong personality in the dressing room, and largely sets the right example.
I hope and trust that he gets the support his efforts deserve.”
Tim Murtagh himself said…
“It’s a massive honour and privilege to have been awarded a Benefit Year.
Ever since I made the move north of the river in 2007, the club and fans have made me feel very welcome and I’ve loved every minute of my time here over the last eight years.
Receiving a Benefit is the highlight of any county cricketers’ career and for that I’d like to thank everyone at Middlesex and those who nominated me.
I look forward to announcing an exciting year of Benefit events ahead and hope that many of you will be able to join me in celebrating this special year.
