Middlesex CCC Academy Match Programme Summer 2010

Reading CC - Sunday 18th April - 11am start - Reading CC

The opening fixture at Reading provided an opportunity for several trialists with Will Vanderspar and Adam Rossington playing in the Second Eleven and Jamie Southgate and Jamie Hoddle playing for their respective Minor Counties. Tom Simmons made the most of his opportunity scoring a hundred and his Hertfordshire team-mate Lewis Champion demonstrated his potential with a quickfire half century to take the score past 300 in fifty overs. Reading struggled in their reply with all the bowlers performing well, Ajay Sangha took three wickets in an excellent spell as the Home Counties outfit were eventually bowled out for 102.

Finchley CC - Sunday 25th April - 11.30am start - Finchley CC

A stronger looking Finchley side made a positive start to a game reduced to forty overs due to a delayed start, Steve Selwood dominated the first ten overs and set the tone for the home side's innings. Ajay Sangha and Will Jones applied the breaks in the middle phase of the innings but a steady stream of boundaries helped the Middlesex Premier League side set an imposing target of 227. With the aid of some wayward bowling the Academy reply got off to a frenetic start and despite the dismissal of Vanderspar, Shelvin Gumbs made good use of the power play in the first twelve overs. As the rain arrived James Kettleborough 94* and Adam Rossington 41 stepped up the run rate and led the side home to a seven wicket win with two overs to spare.

Hertfordshire Development Squad - Sunday 9th May - 11am start - Merchant Taylors

Despite a freezing day at Merchant Taylors on Sunday, Will Vanderspar and Adam Rossington continued their outstanding early season form with impressive performances against a Hertfordshire Development side. Vanderspar seemed set for his fifth century of the summer as he and fellow opener Fred Daeche-Marshall passed a hundred for the first wicket. Needing only twelve to reach three figures, Vanderspar was stumped but the early momentum was maintained as Rossington took the Herts attack apart scoring 149* off only 79 balls as Middlesex posted an impressive 381 in their fifty overs. Herts mounted a spirited reply against a disciplined bowling attack containing a number of trialists, but the daunting target was never threatened as Herts ended on 192 with Jamie Hoddle taking three for fourteen.

London Universities - Sunday 16th May - 11am start - Latymer School

The Academy produced another strong batting performance on sunday against the London Universities at Latymer School. A delayed start did nothing to deter the Middlesex batsman as openers James Kettleborough (64) and Tom Simmons (44) put on a hundred for the first wicket. Shelvin Gumbs (65) and Andy Laws (44) increased the momentum in the middle of the innings and Fred Daeche-Marshall (41*) and Adam Rossington (33) finished the innings with a flourish to set the students an imposing target of 331 in 45 overs.

Ten overs into London's reply the heavens opened and the rain that forced the abandonment at Lords brought an early end to the proceedings.
