Middlesex County Cricket Club announces Adam Voges as overseas player, along with County Championship, NatWest T20 Blast and Royal London One-Day Cup captaincy plans for 2016

Middlesex County Cricket Club is delighted to announce that Adam Voges will be re-joining the club for the 2016 season. Voges has committed to spend two periods of the 2016 season with Middlesex; stays that will work around his anticipated Australian commitments and the availability of Brendon McCullum.

Voges will initially join Middlesex CCC prior to the start of the 2016 season and be available through to early June. He will then return to Middlesex for the conclusion of the season, expected to be from mid-August.

During his time with Middlesex Voges will captain the club in the County Championship.

Middlesex is also delighted to announce that Dawid Malan and James Franklin will captain the club in the NatWest T20 Blast and the Royal London One-Day Cup in 2016. Malan and Franklin will replace Eoin Morgan, who has stepped down from the position of Middlesex limited-overs cricket captain.

Malan will captain Middlesex in the NatWest T20 Blast. Since making his T20 debut for Middlesex in 2006 Malan has played 92 short form matches for the club and has scored more than 2,250 runs. These performances deservedly won him a place on this winter’s England Lions tour to UAE. Malan was England Lions’ leading batsman during the winter T20 and 50-over series against Pakistan A.

On being named as Middlesex’s NatWest T20 Blast Captain, Dawid Malan commented…

“I consider it a great honour to have been appointed Captain of the Middlesex CCC T20 Blast side. It’s a dream come true for me and I would like to thank Angus Fraser and the club for putting their faith in me.

“Since winning the Twenty20 trophy back in 2008, as a team we have struggled with consistency in this format. With the exciting squad we now have here at Middlesex however, combined with the signing of some quality, experienced overseas players, we’ll be looking to change our fortunes in the competition this year.”

Franklin will captain Middlesex in the Royal London One-Day Cup. Franklin captained Middlesex in all forms of cricket in 2015, standing in for Voges in County Championship cricket when he departed to play for Australia and for Eoin Morgan when he was absent. Franklin has great captaincy experience, having led Wellington for a number of years before joining Middlesex. He will also captain the club in County Championship cricket when Voges is away, which is expected to be a period of five games.

On being appointed Middlesex’s Royal London One-Day Cup Captain, James Franklin commented…

“Firstly, I am honoured and excited to be named as captain of our fifty over side. We are desperate as a playing group to show that we can compete strongly in this format of the game and I feel confident that with the fantastic mix of youth and experience we have within the squad we have a great chance of doing so in 2016.”

Commenting on the news, Middlesex CCC’s Managing Director of Cricket, Angus Fraser, said...

“What we have attempted in the past in limited-overs cricket has not produced the results we wanted, so, following Eoin Morgan’s decision to step down, we have decided to try something different. This structure will give different individuals the chance to grab hold of, energise and direct a team in a different form of the game.

“I believe, looking forward, the times when one person will captain every team at a club will be rare. Times have changed from when Mike Brearley and Mike Gatting captained Middlesex. The expectation to compete in every competition is high and tolerance levels, when this fails to happen, are lower. The cocktail creates an environment where the pressure of doing all three jobs would quickly wear a person down.

“Adam’s return is something we are all delighted with. He may not have spent a huge amount of time with us but during the time he has been with us he has made an extremely positive impression. Adam continues to show what a high-quality player he is – and we know what a top bloke he is.

“Dawid is at a stage in his career where he is ready to take on greater responsibility. He is an extremely good T20 player and has a lot of experience. He is keen to lead and I want to encourage that.

“James was outstanding for us last season. His experience and character were invaluable. He helped the club out in a couple of tricky situations and ensured there was a calm, disciplined and positive air around the squad. Richard Scott, myself and the rest of Middlesex’s coaching and support staff are looking forward to working closely with them all.”
