Middlesex Second Eleven were denied the chance of victory at Southgate’s Walker Ground, when heavy rain descended on North London and put a halt to their chances of securing a second fifty over victory in two days.
Middlesex won the toss against the Club Cricket Conference, and Stephen Eskinazi and Savin Perera duly opened the batting under overcast skies.
The pair set off at a healthy pace and put together a commanding opening partnership, adding 225 for the first wicket, before Eskinazi finally fell for a brilliant 117.
This brought George Scott to the crease to join Perera, who had now passed fifty, and the pair continued to pile on the runs for Middlesex.
When Perera went, for a well-made 81, the total had moved onto 268 for 2 with over ten overs of the innings remaining and a big total looked on the cards for the hosts.
Podmore joined Scott in the middle and he and Podmore resumed business as usual, both reaching half centuries, as the Conference bowlers were put to the sword by the Middlesex batsmen.
Scott fell for a rapid 65, although Podmore kept going until the very last ball of the innings, when he was dismissed for 78, and Middlesex Seconds had posted an impressive total of 364 for 4 in their fifty overs.
Faced with a huge run chase, the Club Cricket Conference openers got off to a steady start and immediately set about reducing the deficit, taking the score to 29 off the first five overs before a rain showers blew in and took the players off the field.
Resuming after a short delay, the Conference side took their score to 71 from the opening 11 overs, before persistent rain began to fall, leaving the umpires with little option but to retire the players to the pavilion and abandon the match.
