Tredwell sinks Middlesex Panthers with spell of 6 wickets for 4 runs
A poor batting display at Southgate against Kent saw Middlesex well beaten in their second Friends Provident Trophy match. They collapsed from 61-2 to 68-8 with James Tredwell taking six wickets in 24 balls with his off-spin before the last two wickets added 65 runs to take Middlesex to 133 all-out.
Kent had little difficulty in passing the score with four wickets down, winning with 12.4 overs to spare.
Shaun Udal won the toss for Middlesex and opted to bat first on a fresh wicket from that used for the LV County Championship that finished on Friday. Godleman and Hughes got Middlesex off to a confident start, scoring 31 off the first six overs before Godleman was caught at the wicket off Azhar Mahmood for sixteen.
Steffan Jones replaced Azhar Mahmood with the score on 47-1 after 12 overs and with his first delivery, bowled Neil Dexter for a single. Hughes and Malan took the total to 61-2 before Hughes, who had been missed by Denly when he had only made two, was caught by Denly off Tredwell’s first delivery for 23.
The collapse set in during Tredwell’s second over; Dawid Malan hit the first ball straight to Steffan Jones at mid-off to be dismissed for two, Eoin Morgan (13) popped-up a catch to Robert Key at short mid-off from the fourth ball before Gareth Berg was caught at slip for a duck off the final ball of the over to reduce the Panthers to 65-6.
Shaun Udal (2) holed out at mid-on off the fifth ball of Tredwell’s following over and when Tim Murtagh was LBW for a first ball duck, Tredwell had figures of 6 wickets for 4 runs. Chris Silverwood joined Ben Scott at the wicket and Silverwood showed his powerful hitting by striking Tredwell for two sixes in successive overs.
The score advanced to 93-8 before Silverwood was caught off Ferley for 16. Steve Finn showed how his batting is improving by helping Ben Scott add 40 runs for the last wicket, the highest partnership of the innings. Finn made 13 before he was bowled by Azhar Mahmood to leave Middlesex 133 all-out, Ben Scott was 29 not out; James Tredwell had figures of 6-27 from his ten overs.
Kent skipper Robert Key opened the batting with Joe Denly – Key was only playing as he had captained the England Lions to a win over the West Indies with a day to spare. The pair put on 35 for the first wicket before Key was caught at the wicket off Chris Silverwood for seventeen.
Martin van Jaarsveld was quickly in his stride, taking four singles off the first four balls faced. Joe Denly then showed his immense talent, taking eight runs off Dawid Malan’s second over and hitting him for a straight six in his following over.
Malan however, had his revenge next ball when Denly danced down the wicket, missed, was stumped by Ben Scott for 32. Martin van Jaarsveld (20) hit the opening ball of Malan’s fifth over for a straight six but hit the following delivery straight to Tim Murtagh at mid-off who took the catch.
Stevens and Hockley then took the match beyond the Panthers’ reach, putting on 46 runs for the fourth wicket before Hockley was bowled by Steve Finn for 18. Geraint Jones joined Stevens and the pair saw the Spitfires home, with Stevens ending on 37 not out.
