Available Role – Chair, Middlesex Cricket

Middlesex Cricket, a members' club based at Lord's is responsible for cricket, from men's and women's professional teams to recreational cricket for all ages within 17 London Boroughs that form the county of Middlesex.

We are looking to appoint a non-executive Chair in early '23. The new Chair will be an individual of outstanding achievement, with the time, passion and commitment to devote to the Board and associated stakeholders at this important time in the development of the sport, representing the Club at a variety of levels ranging from local recreational cricket clubs and associations through to the government, and the ECB and MCC. They will chair a talented group of similarly committed leaders and work closely with the Chief Executive Officer of Middlesex Cricket. The successful candidate is likely to have a strong background of experience gained in a number of possible sectors such as a corporate, sporting environment or not for profit and is likely to have experience as a Trustee or Non-Executive Director with a strong understanding of risk and governance together with a collaborative approach and desire to bring their skills and commitment to further develop cricket across the County both at the elite and recreational level and ensuring our sport remains inclusive to all within our community.

Principal Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and expertise to the board and the executive management team, including monitoring and evaluating the performance and effectiveness of the Board, all Board Committees and of the Chief Executive Officer.
• Set and review MCCC's vision, mission and strategic aims. Ensure the necessary resources are secured for the organisation to meet its objectives and review its performance.
• Review with the board, MCCC's values and standards and ensure that its obligations to its members and other stakeholders are met, including promoting equality, diversity and inclusion across all aspects of Middlesex cricket.
• Ensure there is appropriate stakeholder engagement, including listening to and responding to key stakeholders including the members, cricketers, staff and volunteers of MCCC and Sunrisers, together with the ECB, MCC and the cricket clubs across the county.
• Oversee the financial performance and be satisfied as to the quality and integrity of financial information provided to the Board and the underlying systems and controls and accountability framework.
• Ensure that robust safeguarding and welfare measures are in place.
• Develop the future of MCCC in terms of its evolution and specifically ensure succession planning is in place.
• Be aware of the unique relationship of MCCC with MCC and ensure this relationship continues to positively develop and that the partnership is healthy, fruitful and well aligned.
• Alongside the Board, ensure that the organisation does everything it can to exercise and demonstrate good governance, including full compliance with the County Partnership Agreement with the ECB as well as fulfilling its legal obligations.
• Oversee the relationship between Middlesex Cricket and cricket generally within Middlesex, with a focus on increasing participation across the county, including men's, women's, junior and disability cricket.

Time Commitment

The time commitment required is variable depending on the needs of the role at any given time - perhaps as much as up to 1-2 days a week- including engaging with members at matches and members events throughout the season.

In addition, given the ongoing discussions around the High Performance Review, the Chair, along with the CEO, will need to engage with the ECB, the MCC and the wider cricket community in representing the interests of MCCC during 2023 and 2024.

We hope to attract candidates with the right skill set who have a positive desire to commit their time and energy and positively contribute to MCCC.

Skills Knowledge and Experience

• An experienced Chair with successful board level experience of a complex organisation in either the public private or not for profit sectors.
• Ability to analyse complex and detailed information and take a strategic view
• To be a good role model and have the ability to lead in setting the standard of governance for MCCC
• A confident decision maker, collaborative with the ability to negotiate outcomes and influence others
• Ability to engage, communicate effectively and influence a broad range of stakeholders including members MCC, ECB and the wider cricketing community to promote MCCC
• Good understanding of corporate governance and commitment to continuous improvement of the Board and MCCC
• Ability to establish constructive and supportive yet challenging working relationships with the CEO and other Board members and officers of MCCC.
• Strong commitment to safeguarding and equality, diversity and inclusion.
