Alvan Seth-Smith

Biography

Alvan has lived in Northwood, Middlesex for over 60 years. He attended Merchant Taylors' School (1967-73) (second XI cricket and hockey) and read Classics at King’s College London (BA Hons 1976, MA 1977).

His career was with professional bodies in London, latterly with the General Dental Council as Deputy Chief Executive. Responsibilities included organising the inspection of dental degree courses, implementing the continuing professional development policy for dentists, and liaising with the UK Departments of Health and fellow dental regulators in Europe.

Alvan’s principal hobby is county cricket and he has served on the main Committee/Board of Middlesex County Cricket Club (MCCC) since 1981 (with only a four-year gap). He is also a Committee Member of the Seaxe Club.

Alvan has been a Member of Middlesex CCC for 50 years, with his first committee service in 1975 forming the Hillingdon borough group with Viveca Dutt. In 1976 he edited the booklet celebrating the Championship success and devised the Club's yearbook 'Annual Review' in 1980, editing it for its first ten years.

He represents Middlesex on the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) Membership and General Purposes Committee and on the County Cricket Heritage Forum. He also belongs to the Cricket Society, the Association of Cricket Statisticians and Historians, the Master's Club and Northwood Cricket Club.

In the City of London, he was installed as Master of the Worshipful Company of Glovers of London on 7th November 2017, having joined this Livery Company in 2003. In March 2018 he assisted in organising a fundraising dinner in the Long Room raising over £38,000 for the Glovers' charitable fund.

Alvan’s other interests include London Zoo, church and castle crawling, and family history.

His wife Rowena is Head Orthoptist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and until recently chaired the British and Irish Orthoptic Society. Both are Life Members of Middlesex.
