MIDDLESEX WOMEN RETAIN LONDON CUP

Match Result- Middlesex Women win by 7 wickets

Middlesex Women retain the London Cup for the fourth consecutive year after beating Surrey by 7 wickets in Guildford.

In a match which saw new signing Cordelia Griffith make her debut for the side, Surrey won the toss and decided to bat first.

Middlesex started on the front foot however, with Hayleigh Brennan claiming the early wicket of Travers for 14. Smith stood firm however, and despite wickets falling around her, she was able to hit 44 before Emma Albery got the crucial wicket with the score at 83-4.

It was soon 93-5, after Middlesex claimed there first of two run outs on the day, with Gordon the victim of quick fielding from Beth Morgan.

Gray and Southby fell in quick succession with the score at 118-8, and Surrey were only able to add 6 more runs before the 20 overs were up, meaning Middlesex were set 125 to win.

Naomi Dattani and Hayleigh Brennan were the pick of the bowlers, with figures of 2-16 and 2-23 respectively, with Emma Albery contributing the big wicket of Smith.

Middlesex openers Naomi Dattani and Natasha Miles started off the response with some excellent batting, with Dattani scoring at far beyond a run-a-ball.

Dattani faced the large majority of deliveries in the early overs, and was quick to reach an incredible 52 from 34 balls before Gregory dismissed her; an innings that put Middlesex firmly in control of the match.

Miles maintained this initiative, and made it tough for the Surrey attack to make a breakthrough. Despite claiming the wicket of Dunkley with the score at 79-2, Surrey were not able to wrestle back control of the match, and a solid partnership between Miles and Beth Morgan of 44 put victory within Middlesex’s grasp, with only 2 runs needed to win.

Amara Carr came to the crease and quickly found the boundary with her second ball, meaning Middlesex secured victory with an over to spare.
