FOCUS ON - MOORMEAD CRICKET CLUB

With All Stars Cricket starting for the 2021 summer this weekend, we spoke to Moormead Cricket Club ahead of another exciting summer for the Richmond club.

All Stars Cricket is now into its fifth summer, with programmes looking to return to the exciting high numbers seen in 2019. All Stars provides a fantastic first experience of cricket for children aged 5-8, via eight weeks of skills development sessions. The programme introduces children to the sport, teaches them new skills, and helps them make friends – all whilst having fun.

Founded in 2017, Moormead CC is a volunteer-run grassroots junior cricket club for local boys and girls. Moormead CC provide fun, skills and exercise for children, whilst supporting the upkeep of their local area.

How has the All Stars Cricket programme benefited Moormead CC?

The All Stars programme provides over 90 local children with a fun introduction to the sport. Parents use it as a great way to keep their children active every weekend, where they have fun with their friends. The club has also led to improvements to the wider Moormead area, with the club helping out with park maintenance, and the London Cricket Trust (LCT) investing in a new non-turf pitch (NTP) for the benefit of all members of the local community.

What else happens at Moormead CC?

Moormead also run Dynamos Cricket (for 8-11 year olds), with a further 90 children taking part each weekend, and the oldest children are now also participating in Middlesex Junior Cricket Association (MJCA) hardball cricket. The sheer number of participants has really helped boost community spirit, and Sunday morning cricket has become a real social focal point for many families in the local area. Parents bring their children because they enjoy the activities, and children are continuously occupied – there is no standing around waiting for something to happen.

All coaches are local parents, and as many as possible are encouraged to get involved – those who had limited knowledge of cricket or have not played for many years are now helping and gaining coaching qualifications – hugely rewarding for both them and their children. And the annual parents match is hugely popular – and especially amusing for the children!
