Middlesex Cricket can today confirm that opening batter, Mark Stoneman, will leave the Club at the end of the season.
Newcastle-upon-Tyne born Stoneman, 37, began his playing career at Durham and represented his home county from 2007 until the end of 2016, playing 135 First-Class matches, hitting 16 hundreds, and scoring 7,659 runs, before leaving to join Surrey.
As a Surrey player he made 102 appearances for the Club in all formats between 2017 and 2021 and received eleven Test caps for England across 2017 and 2018 whilst at the Oval.
He remained at the Oval until halfway through the 2021 season, when he crossed the river northbound to join Middlesex.
In his career to date he has made a total of 248 first-class appearances, scoring 14,320 runs at an average of 34.09. He has made an additional 192 white-ball appearances, hitting 5,158 runs.
As a Middlesex player, since 2021, he has made 44 first-class appearances, hitting 2,561 runs at an average of 34.60, plus a further 24 appearances across both white-ball formats, hitting 723 runs.
Stoneman yesterday hit his seventh first-class hundred for the Club, with his innings forcing Middlesex into a dominant position against Derbyshire in the Club’s latest Vitality County Championship encounter.
Speaking of Stoneman’s departure, Director of Cricket, Alan Coleman, commented:
“We would like to thank Mark for all he done for Middlesex Cricket in the three years he has been at the Club.
“It is always disappointing when we have to make the decision to release a player, however in the financial position the Club is in, with the constraints upon our salary cap that we are working under, we are forced to make these extremely difficult decisions.
The role Mark has played in helping to develop the younger batters within our group cannot be underestimated and our most sincere thanks go to him for all he has contributed to Middlesex Cricket.
“We wish him well in whatever comes next in his career.”
