Middlesex Women’s unbeaten run in the Vitality Blast came to an end yesterday, as Glamorgan secured a 30-run victory at Colwyn Bay Cricket Club.
Having won the toss, the hosts opted to bat first, and while Gaya Gole opened with a tidy over – conceding just two runs – Glamorgan’s openers quickly accelerated. Daisy Jeanes and Lauren Parfitt built a commanding foundation, putting on 85 for the first wicket in 8.1 overs before the breakthrough came courtesy of Sarah Pearson. After being hit for six off her first delivery, Pearson struck with her second, having Jeanes caught by skipper, Saskia Horley, for 53.
Just one over later, Rachana Cambampaty struck, removing Emily Burke for 5 with a sharp caught and bowled dismissal. As Middlesex looked to slow the momentum, Pearson soon returned to take her second scalp, bowling Bethan Gammon for 8, and finishing with figures of 2/35 from her four overs.
Despite those breakthroughs, Glamorgan’s fourth-wicket partnership between Parfitt and Bea Ellis added valuable runs for the hosts. Anisha Dissanayake claimed her first Vitality Blast wicket in the 19th over, bowling Ellis for 20, before Glamorgan closed on 171/4, with captain, Parfitt, finishing unbeaten on 75.
In response, Middlesex opened with Pippa Sproul and Artemis Downer. The side reached 29/2 by the end of the powerplay, as Horley joined Sproul at the crease. Sproul looked solid before falling lbw to Sara Phillips for 23, bringing Riva Pindoria to the middle.
A fifth-wicket stand between Horley and Georgia Irving offered hope, as the pair found the boundary regularly and kept Middlesex in the hunt. Irving reached an impressive 33 off 20 before she was caught by Parfitt off Burke. Horley followed shortly after, in the penultimate over, caught by Jeanes off Gemma Porter’s bowling for 50 – her second consecutive half-century of the season.
With 36 needed off the final 10 deliveries, the target proved too steep. A flurry of wickets in the final over stalled the chase, and Middlesex closed on 141/9, falling short by 30 runs, despite recording their highest total of the Blast campaign so far.
They will look to bounce back and return to winning ways next Sunday, when they host Gloucestershire at Radlett in their next Blast fixture.
