STOKE NEWINGTON WIN FIRST MWCL INDOOR SMASH OF WINTER

The MITC Fulcrum SMASH Indoor competition, played over four weeks at Finchley came to an exciting end on Sunday as Stoke Newington CC pipped Gunnersbury CC by just half a point, to take the title of East winners.

The Middlesex Indoor Cricket School, Finchley has played host Crouch End, Gunnersbury, Stanmore, Southgate and Stoke Newington Women’s teams playing off against each other in a brand new format indoor format, with points not just being available for wins and losses but also for pair v pair head-to-heads.

It was Gunnersbury CC who went into the final weekend on top of the table after a consistent first three weeks that saw them go unbeaten. Unfortunately, they never recovered from a disastrous start in what turned out to be a title decider against Stoke Newington, losing four wickets in the opening over – eventually losing by a margin of 80 runs.

There was also success on the final day for the county’s newest women’s team – Southgate CC. They beat Stanmore to record their first ever win as a team.

The competition continues this weekend, moving to Ada Lovelace School for five more clubs in the west to play.

Thanks to all who took part and to Ashish Lakhlani for umpiring the competition, it was played in magnificent spirit all the way through.
