


Middlesex Women produced another dominant all-round performance as they secured a commanding 76-run victory over Hertfordshire yesterday.
Having lost the toss and been put into bat, Middlesex posted an imposing 162/3 from their 20 overs, thanks to outstanding innings from Issy Routledge and Artemis Downer. The bowlers then backed up the strong batting display brilliantly, restricting Hertfordshire to 86/7 to complete a convincing win.
Middlesex made an aggressive start through openers Routledge and Downer, who immediately put the Hertfordshire attack under pressure.
The pair completed their 100 partnership and added 119 for the first wicket in just 14.4 overs, laying the platform for a substantial total. Downer was the first to reach her half-century, bringing it up from only 39 deliveries in an innings that included eight boundaries. She eventually fell for an excellent 52 from 40 balls after an attacking knock that maintained Middlesex’s momentum throughout the innings.
Routledge continued to anchor the innings well while accelerating through the middle overs. She reached her 50 from just 39 balls and finished unbeaten on 89 from 62 deliveries, striking 14 fours in a tactical innings.
Although Middlesex lost a couple of late wickets, including Georgia Irving for 3 and Scarlett Hughes for 15, they maintained their momentum through to the close, finishing on 162/3 from their 20 overs.
Middlesex made early breakthroughs to immediately place Hertfordshire under pressure. Sonali Patel struck in the second over to remove Cara Castleman, before a sharp run out from Artemis Downer and Scarlett Hughes reduced the visitors to 15/2.
Hertfordshire attempted to rebuild through Ria Nash and Hollie Arrol, but Middlesex continued to control proceedings with disciplined bowling and sharp fielding. Hannah Francis claimed the wicket of Arrol for 15, while captain Saskia Horley bowled Nash for 25 to leave Hertfordshire struggling at 58/5.
Routledge then capped a great all-round display with an excellent spell of 3/5 from her three overs. She removed both Elizabeth Clune and Emily Barnes late in the innings and also claimed the wicket of Jenna-May Botha, ensuring Hertfordshire were unable to mount any late resistance.
Patel, Francis and Horley each added a wicket of their own, while Middlesex’s attack collectively maintained pressure throughout the innings, restricting Hertfordshire to just 86/7 from their 20 overs.
It was another impressive all-round display from Middlesex, with a dominant opening partnership setting up the victory before a disciplined bowling performance and sharp fielding completed a comprehensive win.
Middlesex will progress into the next round of the cup where they will play Warwickshire Bears.
