Middlesex Women produced a dominant all-round display in the Vitality Blast yesterday, defeating Gloucestershire Women by 31 runs at the Seat Unique Stadium in Bristol.
After being put into bat, Middlesex posted an imposing 192/3 from their 20 overs, thanks largely to a Middlesex record-breaking century from captain Saskia Horley. In reply, Gloucestershire were restricted to 161/7 as Middlesex secured their third victory of the Vitality Blast campaign.
The visitors made an aggressive start with the bat despite losing Scarlett Hughes for 37 from just 16 deliveries. The wicketkeeper struck seven fours and a six at the top of the order before being dismissed with the score on 39 in the fourth over.
Horley then joined Abbie Whybrow at the crease and the pair transformed the innings with a magnificent second-wicket partnership worth 138 runs. The stand was the first century partnership of Middlesex's innings and laid the platform for a commanding total.
Whybrow played an important supporting role, compiling 36 from 39 deliveries and helping guide Middlesex through the middle overs. While she rotated the strike effectively, Horley took the attack to the Gloucestershire bowlers in a display of power and timing.
The Middlesex captain reached her half-century from just 28 balls before accelerating further to bring up a landmark century from only 47 deliveries. Horley's innings of 111 from 56 balls contained 18 fours and a six and was the first T20 century recorded by a Middlesex Women's player.
Whybrow was eventually dismissed in the 18th over before Horley departed shortly before the close, but Middlesex finished strongly to post 192/3 from their overs.
Gloucestershire's chase got off to a difficult start as Sarah Pearson struck twice inside the opening three overs, removing both Rebecca Halliday and Millie Ahearne to leave the hosts 22/2.
Amelie Munday responded positively with 27 from 14 balls and shared a partnership with Emily Geach to keep Gloucestershire in contention. However, Anaya Patel produced a decisive spell in the middle overs to swing the contest firmly in Middlesex's favour.
Patel first removed Munday before dismissing both Izzy Patel and Geach as Gloucestershire slipped behind the required rate. The off-spinner then added the wicket of captain Liv Daniels to complete an outstanding return of 4/27 from her four overs.
Geach top-scored for the hosts with 39, while Georgigina Start contributed 23, but Middlesex continued to take wickets at regular intervals and prevented any late surge.
Horley added a wicket of her own when Start was stumped by Hughes, while the Middlesex fielding unit remained sharp throughout the innings.
Gloucestershire closed on 161/7 from their 20 overs, leaving Middlesex comfortable winners by 31 runs.
Horley's historic century headlined an impressive team performance, while Patel's four-wicket haul and Pearson's early breakthroughs ensured Middlesex completed a comprehensive victory in Bristol
