MATCH REPORT | MIDDLESEX WOMEN V WARWICKSHIRE WOMEN | VITALITY T20 COUNTY CUP

Middlesex Women exit the Vitality T20 Women’s County Cup at the Round Three stage as Warwickshire Bears Women claimed an eight-wicket victory in a high-scoring contest at Radlett CC.

After being asked to bat first, Middlesex produced an impressive total of 185/5 from their 20 overs, led by a superb half-century from captain Saskia Horley. However, Warwickshire responded strongly, reaching 188/2 with five balls remaining.

Middlesex made a positive start with openers Artemis Downer and Scarlett Hughes taking advantage of the powerplay. The pair added 41 for the first wicket before Downer was caught by Nat Wraith for an entertaining 30 from just 21 deliveries, including six boundaries.

Hughes continued the momentum and struck 25 from 20 balls, hitting three fours and a six, before she was trapped lbw by Amu Surenkumar in the ninth over with Middlesex well placed at 70/2.

Horley then took centre stage with a commanding innings that provided the foundation for Middlesex’s total. The captain reached her half-century from only 24 deliveries, striking 11 boundaries in a dazzling knock of 50 from 25 balls. She shared an important third-wicket stand with Riva Pindoria before becoming the third wicket to fall in the 13th over.

Pindoria maintained the momentum through the latter stages of the innings, finishing unbeaten on 36 from 29 balls. She found strong support from Finty Trussler, who contributed 29 from 22 deliveries as the pair added 61 runs for the fourth wicket and kept the scoreboard moving throughout the closing overs.

Although Warwickshire picked up late wickets through Bethan Ellis, Middlesex finished strongly to post 185/5, a total that represented one of their most productive batting displays of the season.

Warwickshire’s chase began in equally positive fashion as Megan Austin and Abbey Freeborn added 42 for the opening wicket inside five overs. Middlesex found an early breakthrough when Sonali Patel removed Austin for 20, with Georgia Irving taking the catch.

The home team were then put under pressure by a match-defining second-wicket partnership between Freeborn and Wraith. The pair combined for 111 runs, counter-attacking effectively and ensuring Warwickshire remained ahead of the required rate throughout the middle overs.

Middlesex ended the stand of Wraith when Horley claimed her wicket, again with Irving holding the catch.

However, with Warwickshire requiring only 35 more runs, Freeborn continued to anchor the chase. She reached an unbeaten 79 from 61 balls, striking 10 boundaries, while Surenkumar added 11 not out from seven deliveries as the Bears completed victory with five balls to spare.

Patel and Horley claimed the wickets for Middlesex, while Issy Routledge delivered an spell of 4/28, but the home side were unable to make further inroads as Warwickshire advanced in the competition.

Middlesex will now turn their attention back to Vitality Blast action as they look to build on an encouraging start.
