Middlesex Women produced an encouraging performance despite suffering a narrow two-wicket defeat to Kent Women in the Metro Bank One Day Cup Women League 2 at The St Lawrence Ground.
Having won the toss and elected to bat, Middlesex posted an impressive 306/7 from their 50 overs, with three players registering half-centuries in a commanding batting display.
The visitors made a steady start as Pippa Sproul and Scarlett Hughes added 41 for the opening wicket before Sproul was run out for 21. Hughes made 15 before she was caught off the bowling of Hollie Young, leaving Middlesex 43/2.
Riva Pindoria and captain Saskia Horley then rebuilt superbly with a match-defining third-wicket partnership of 129. Pindoria continued her fine form with a composed 60 from 72 deliveries, striking seven boundaries, while Horley produced another authoritative innings, making 63 from just 56 balls with nine fours. Their stand put Middlesex firmly in control before both fell in the space of two deliveries shortly after the 30-over mark.
Artemis Downer ensured the momentum continued with an outstanding unbeaten 67 from 56 balls, hitting eight fours, while Abbie Whybrow provided the perfect support with an excellent 48 from just 36 deliveries. The pair shared an important 87-run sixth-wicket partnership to lift Middlesex beyond the 300-mark, with Finty Trussler also contributing 13 as the visitors closed on an imposing 306/7.
Kent's chase began steadily before Layla Judge struck twice inside the opening eight overs, removing Coco Streets and Kelly Castle to reduce the hosts to 34/2.
Kent responded through an excellent partnership between wicketkeeper Rachel King and Maddie Blinkhorn-Jones, with Horley eventually breaking the stand by dismissing Blinkhorn-Jones for 44. King continued to anchor the innings and shared another century partnership with Elsa Barnfather, who added 51, to keep Kent on course.
Middlesex refused to let the contest slip away and continued to fight throughout the closing stages. Horley claimed her third wicket when she dismissed King for an outstanding 106, while Issy Routledge removed Barnfather and Isabella James, and Siya Nanavati picked up the wicket of Hannah Hardwick to leave Kent needing late runs with wickets falling.
Despite the narrow defeat, Middlesex produced plenty of encouraging moments across the day. Three half-centuries from Riva Pindoria, Saskia Horley and Artemis Downer helped the visitors post an imposing total of 306, while the bowling attack continued to fight throughout the chase, taking the game deep before Kent eventually reached their target with 10 balls remaining.
