Men’s Head Coach Peter Fulton has named a squad of 13 for tomorrow’s Metro Bank One-Day Cup opener against Essex at Radlett CC.
Ben Geddes will captain Middlesex’s One-Day Cup squad again this year after leading the side to the knockout stages for the first time since 2019 in last year’s competition.
Five Middlesex players will miss this year’s competition following call-ups to The Hundred with Leus du Plooy (Manchester Super Giants), Max Holden (Manchester Super Giants), Sebasitain Morgan (MI London), Tom Helm (Birmingham Phoenix), and Caleb Falconer (Southern Brave) all unavailable. Ryan Higgins is also still unavailable for selection whilst he recovers from a wrist injury.
Despite the missing players, there is still plenty of experience in the squad. Henry Brookes, Middlesex’s leading wicket-taker in last year’s competition, Noah Cornwell, Blake Cullen, Toby Roland-Jones and Naavya Sharma will make up the seam attack.
Zafar Gohar will lead the spin attack alongside Luke Hollman. Josh de Caires and Nathan Fernandes are also available to offer support should it be required.
The top order of Josh de Caires, Joe Cracknell and Sam Robson proved successful last year; however, Fulton may look to mix things up and bring Nathan Fernandes up the order; the 22-year-old has been successful in the second eleven this season, scoring over 700 runs this year.
There are plenty of options to make up the middle order with Ben Geddes, Luke Hollman, Joe Cracknell, Zafar Gohar and Aaryan Sawant, who will be looking to make his first-team debut for the club, all in the squad.
The sides last met in this format of the game in 2023, when Essex came out on top by three runs in a thriller at Chelmsford. Both sides will head into tomorrow’s game knowing the Radlett surface provides a good opportunity to pile on runs and apply scoreboard pressure to the opposition.
