MATCH REPORT | MIDDLESEX WOMEN V NORTHAMPTONSHIRE WOMEN | METRO BANK ONE-DAY CUP

Middlesex Women suffered a 105-run defeat against Northamptonshire Steelbacks Women in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup Women League 2 at Radlett Cricket Club.

Having won the toss and elected to bowl first, Middlesex restricted Northamptonshire to 298/8 from their 50 overs, with Sonali Patel claiming an impressive three-wicket haul. However, despite a battling 80 from Abbie Whybrow, Middlesex were bowled out for 193 in 35.2 overs.

Northamptonshire made a steady start after being asked to bat, with Amelia Kemp and captain Chloe Hill putting together an opening partnership of 44. Kemp struck four boundaries during her 22 before she was dismissed by Lauren Turner in the ninth over.

Hill continued to anchor the innings and was joined by Michaela Kirk, who added 28 from 31 deliveries before Sonali Patel claimed her first wicket. Patel then struck again just four balls later, removing Beth Ascott without scoring to leave Northamptonshire 80/3.

Hill remained at the crease and brought up an excellent half-century from 79 balls, having already struck eight boundaries. She found a useful partner in Ava Clive, who contributed 21 from 27 deliveries as the pair helped Northamptonshire move beyond 120.

Sonali Patel continued to provide Middlesex with breakthroughs, completing her three-wicket haul when she dismissed Hill for an excellent 93 from 125 balls. Hill struck 12 fours during a composed innings that provided the foundation for Northamptonshire's imposing total.

Middlesex also claimed wickets through Issy Routledge and Alice Whitmore, while Routledge dismissed both Clive and Ria Fackrell. Fackrell had made a rapid 31 from just 28 balls, including six boundaries, and helped Northamptonshire add 50 for the seventh wicket with Hill before the latter's dismissal.

Northamptonshire finished strongly, with Anisha Patel producing an unbeaten 33 from just 21 deliveries, including six fours. Mabel Reid also remained unbeaten on 15 as the Steelbacks reached 298/8 from their 50 overs.

In reply, Middlesex made a difficult start when Pippa Sproul was dismissed for three by Bethan Robinson, leaving the hosts 30/1. Issy Routledge followed for eight before Northamptonshire began to take control of the chase.

Artemis Downer provided Middlesex with some stability, making 46 from 52 deliveries and striking ten boundaries. She was eventually dismissed by Kemp, who then continued to cause problems by removing Finty Trussler and Riva Pindoria in quick succession.

Kemp produced an outstanding spell with the ball, finishing with figures of 4/21 from her six overs. Lenny Sims also impressed, claiming 3/29 from 7.2 overs as Northamptonshire's attack consistently found ways to break through the Middlesex batting order.

With Middlesex reduced to 90/6, Whybrow launched a superb counter-attack. She reached her half-century from just 36 balls, having already struck seven fours and two sixes, and continued to score at an excellent rate as she attempted to keep Middlesex in the contest.

Whybrow eventually finished with an outstanding 80 from just 51 deliveries, hitting 14 fours and two sixes. She shared a valuable ninth-wicket partnership with Lauren Turner, who contributed 13, as the pair added 50 from just 40 balls to delay Northamptonshire's victory.

However, Whybrow was eventually dismissed by Kemp for 80 with Middlesex on 193, and Turner fell on the following over as the innings ended at the same total in 35.2 overs.

Northamptonshire's victory was built on a strong all-round performance. Hill's excellent 93 and Patel's unbeaten 33 helped the Steelbacks post 298/8, before Kemp's superb 4/21 and Sims' 3/29 dismantled the Middlesex batting order. Sonali Patel's three wickets had earlier provided Middlesex with important breakthroughs, while Whybrow's brilliant 80, including two sixes, gave the hosts something to celebrate despite the eventual 105-run defeat.
