Middlesex Women secured a thrilling two-wicket victory over Sussex Sharks Women in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup Women League 2 at Arundel Castle Cricket Club.
Having been asked to bowl first after Sussex elected to bat, Middlesex produced a disciplined bowling performance to dismiss the hosts for 248 from the final ball of their innings, before successfully chasing down the target with five balls to spare.
Sussex made a cautious start but Middlesex struck early when Siya Nanavati removed Izzy Collis for three to leave the Sharks 6/1. Layla Judge then joined the attack and continued the pressure, helping restrict the scoring during the opening exchanges.
Mollie Adams and Phoebe Wilkinson rebuilt with a partnership of 53 for the second wicket before Sonali Patel broke the stand by bowling Adams for 33. Captain Saskia Horley then claimed the wicket of Wilkinson for 29 as Middlesex continued to chip away at regular intervals.
The innings was anchored by an outstanding 91 from Nancy Harman, who struck 11 boundaries and shared an important fifth-wicket partnership with Shristi Patil. Patil contributed 38 as the pair helped Sussex recover from 91/4 to reach 182/5 and put themselves in a strong position heading into the closing overs.
Middlesex responded superbly with the ball during the latter stages of the innings. Horley claimed her third wicket when she removed Patil before Judge produced an excellent spell at the death, dismissing Harman, Poppy Tulloch and Talitha Stanley to finish with figures of 3/39. Horley also collected 3/39, while Nanavati and Hannah Davis claimed a wicket apiece as Sussex were bowled out for 248.
In reply, Middlesex made a positive start through Pippa Sproul and Artemis Downer, who shared an opening stand of 55. Sproul made 19 before she was dismissed by Kira Docherty, but Downer continued to dominate the scoring and reached an excellent half-century from just 49 deliveries.
Downer struck 57 from 57 balls, including ten boundaries, and added valuable partnerships with Riva Pindoria and Horley to keep Middlesex firmly on course. Pindoria contributed 20 before becoming one of three wickets to fall to Bella Johnson, while Horley added a composed 34 from 45 deliveries.
With Middlesex requiring further acceleration, Abbie Whybrow played a crucial innings in the middle order. She made an excellent 49 from just 41 balls, striking seven fours, and shared a vital sixth-wicket partnership of 71 with Issy Routledge. The stand shifted the momentum decisively in Middlesex’s favour and brought the visitors within touching distance of their target.
There was still late drama as Whybrow fell one run short of a half-century and Middlesex lost three wickets in the closing stages. However, Routledge remained calm under pressure, finishing unbeaten on 34, while Nanavati supported her at the crease as Middlesex reached 249/8 in 49.1 overs to complete a hard-fought victory.
The win was built on strong contributions across the side. Judge and Horley both claimed three wickets as Middlesex restricted Sussex to 248, before Downer’s half-century and Whybrow’s influential 49 helped steer the chase. Routledge’s unbeaten knock ensured Middlesex held their nerve to secure an impressive two-wicket victory on the road.
