Middlesex Cricket can confirm that Alan Coleman has informed the club of his decision to step down as Director of Cricket at the end of 2026.
Coleman has been Director of Cricket at Middlesex since the end of 2021, when he took on the role following the departure of Stuart Law as Head Coach, having previously served as Assistant Coach and Academy Director.
In his five-year tenure as Director of Cricket, overseeing both Men’s and Women’s senior cricket at the club, Coleman has overseen Middlesex Men winning promotion to Division One of the County Championship in 2022, and the Sunrisers winning the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy in 2024. Following the restructuring of the domestic women’s game, Coleman was at the helm for the inception of Middlesex Women as a Tier Two side, and tasted success straight away with the side winning the Vitality Blast in 2025, with Middlesex Men reaching the List A knockouts for the first time since 2019 in the same year. Coleman has enjoyed more success in List A cricket this season, with Middlesex Men reaching their first final in the format since 1990 and Middlesex Women reaching the semi-final stage.
On his decision to step down from the role, Alan Coleman said:
“I’ve been extremely proud to lead the cricket at the club I’ve supported since I was a child, and am proud of what has been achieved in what is widely known as one of the most difficult periods off the field the club has faced.”
“I’ve been fortunate to work with some fantastic players and staff who have given their all. I’d like to make specific mention to the Head Coaches: Richard Johnson, Dane Vilas and Peter Fulton with the men’s team, and Andy Tennant and Marc Broom with our women’s teams, as well as Danni Warren as regional Director of Cricket for Sunrisers, who have been a pleasure to work alongside during this period.
“I’d also like to thank our members and supporters, especially those who have turned up across all of our venues, and across the country, in all weathers to support our men’s and women’s teams.
“I will leave Middlesex with two senior teams with exceptional young talent and huge potential to achieve success in the game, supported by a dedicated staff who will no doubt continue to guide these players well through the coming seasons”
Middlesex Cricket's Interim CEO, Julie Harrington, added:
“I would like to thank Alan for everything he has done for the club during his tenure, and on behalf of everybody at the club, I wish him well for what’s to come.
“Although I have only been at Middlesex for a short period of time, it has been very clear how dedicated Alan has been in the role, and the Club’s successes are a testament to his hard work.
“I am grateful for the early notice provided by Alan, and the planning to appoint his successor has already begun. His philosophy of wanting to win with homegrown players is very much something that we will build on in the years ahead”
Alan will remain in the role until at least the end of this calendar year, overseeing the start of the winter training programme and aiding in the transition period.
