Middlesex in the Community (MITC) had the pleasure of showcasing Walking Cricket for a second consecutive year on Friday 25 September. The session took place during the lunch interval of Middlesex’s county championship match against Northants and was, unsurprisingly, a huge success.
More than 20 walking cricket members of Stanmore Cricket club and Gunnersbury’s walking cricket group had the privilege of spending 30 minutes playing on the pristine Lord’s outfield in front of the Warner Stand. Spectators watching the Middlesex v Northants match stayed in their seats to watch the exhibition, applauding and cheering when the ball was hit for six or a wicket was taken.
MITC would like to thank MCC for allowing the walking cricketers to play on the main ground and for their support of walking cricket. The exhibition was enjoyed hugely by everyone that was involved, providing some with a never to be forgotten moment.
Walking Cricket is a fast growing area of cricket and MITC is keen to support and promote it. Within Middlesex there are thousands of elderly people that could do with a reason to engage in exercise and lead a more active, healthy and social lifestyle. We believe walking cricket is the perfect vehicle and offers the perfect environment for this to happen.
In the last 12 months the number of clubs and organisations that are involved in walking cricket has grown. This has allowed those involved to organise Festival days, often with four different sides participating. These festivals have seen gatherings of 50 plus players and friends, and have been extremely enjoyable.
Middlesex in the Community wants to see Walking Cricket grow, and if you would like to get involved in or find out more about it, and the sessions that may be taking place near you, please contact Angus Fraser at Middlesex in the Community.
