Tomorrow, Middlesex will contest their first List A Final since 1990 when they take on Leicestershire Foxes in the Metro Bank One-Day Final at Trent Bridge.
Men’s Head Coach Peter Fulton has named a squad of 15 for this one, with Ben Geddes captaining the side. The majority of Middlesex’s squad already featured in this competition this season. Ryan Higgins has missed out in the competition thus far with a wrist injury, whilst Harry Duke was not with the club during the group stages, although he did feature once for Yorkshire at the start of the competition.
Middlesex’s opening pair, Josh de Caires and Nathan Fernandes, are tied for the most amount of runs in the competition so far at the club. Both have struck 380 runs so far and have a century to their name.
Max Holden, who spent the majority of the Group Stages at The Hundred, is in the squad for this one. He did make one appearance in the competition, scoring a well-made 65 in our 87-run victory against Derbyshire. Geddes will likely follow him in the order; the skipper is averaging 40 so far in the competition, including a century in the previously mentioned Derbyshire fixture.
Fulton has a number of all-rounders at his disposal, with Caleb Falconer, Ryan Higgins and Sebastian Morgan all providing seam options, with Zafar Gohar, Luke Hollman and Jack Nelson providing spin options in Nottingham.
The Head Coach will have to choose his seamers from Noah Cornwell, Tom Helm, Toby Roland-Jones and Naavya Sharma. Sharma and Cornwell are Middlesex’s leading wicket-takers in the competition, with 17 and 15, respectively. Toby Roland-Jones has shown his class in the competition. Although he only has seven wickets, he has been excellent at restricting runs during the powerplay and has been Middlesex’s most economical bowler in the competition. Helm has only featured twice in the competition so far, however, he has been Middlesex’s go-to white-ball death bowler in recent years. Fulton will need to find his balance between youth and experience for this one.
Our opponents, Leicestershire Foxes, topped Group A of the One-Day Cup; they won five of their eight games in the group stage, and defeated Nottinghamshire in a thrilling Semi-Final at Grace Road. Warwickshire loanee Hamza Shaikh leads the run charts for the Foxes with 509 to his name. He’s nearly 200 runs ahead of the Foxes' second-placed batter Rishi Patel. Both players have scored two centuries this campaign.
With the ball, Alex Green leads the way with 18 wickets at 19.94. He took four wickets against Notts in the Semi-Final to help see his side over the line. Leg-spinning all-rounder Rehan Ahmed will likely return to the Leicestershire side, having spent most of the competition at The Hundred. These two sides last met eachother in this format back in 2023. Leicestershire came out on top in a rain-affected day/night match at Grace Road.
Play is scheduled to get underway at 11am at Trent Bridge on Sunday. Should no play be possible, a reserve day is in place on Monday.
