Middlesex CCC outlines plans for governance reform following independent reviews

Middlesex County Cricket Club has outlined plans to strengthen its leadership and governance following two independent reviews, as the Club looks to build a more stable and sustainable future.

The reviews, undertaken by Campbell Tickell at the request of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), and by Jo Coates of JAM Consulting on behalf of Middlesex, were conducted between June and September 2026.

Both reviews identified significant challenges in the Club's governance arrangements and reached broadly consistent conclusions about the need for change, including stronger Board leadership, clearer accountability, simplified decision-making structures and improved engagement with members and stakeholders.

The Club's Board has welcomed both reports and accepted the underlying rationale for their recommendations, which provide a framework for the next stage of Middlesex's development.

Middlesex is developing a phased programme of improvements, designed to deliver meaningful change while maintaining stability across the Club.

The immediate priorities include:

Recruitment consultants have already been selected (PSD Group) to support the appointment of a new Chair, while work is progressing on revised committee arrangements and additional governance support.

Following the new Chair's appointment, the next phase will focus on completing the Board's renewal, recruiting a permanent Chief Executive and developing the Club's long-term strategy. Some proposed changes will require further Board approval, legal advice or changes to the Club Rules, which would be brought to members for consideration where necessary.

Interim CEO Julie Harrington said:

"Both reviews have provided a valuable and timely opportunity to take an honest look at how Middlesex is governed and what needs to change. While the findings are challenging, there is considerable agreement on the steps needed to move forward.

"Our priority is to turn these recommendations into a clear, coordinated programme of action, with stronger leadership, simpler structures and greater accountability. We are already progressing important elements of this work, and we want members, supporters and stakeholders to understand both the decisions being taken and why, and the progress we are making and when.

"Ultimately, this is about creating the right foundations for Middlesex to thrive, both on and off the field, now and in the long-term."

The recommendations from both reviews will be brought together into a single implementation plan, with clear responsibilities, timelines and measures of progress.

The Club is committed to keeping members, supporters and stakeholders informed as the programme develops, recognising that openness and meaningful engagement will be central to rebuilding confidence and securing its long-term future.

Middlesex Cricket encourages Members, supporters, media and other interested parties to read both independent summary reports and the accompanying comparison of their recommendations.
